Getting rid of ants

Do you have a problem with ants invading your home? It can be really annoying to find ants in your home, and many of them, including the common types can be difficult to control or get rid of. Considering the fact that ants frequently travel through unsanitary areas before ending up on your countertops, you should take steps to get rid of ants at the very first sign of a problem and keep them away from your family, pets and food.

Pavement ants usually nest outdoors under stones, sidewalks and concrete slabs, and invade homes for food. Winged ants are very often mistaken for termites and are also often difficult to locate in your home. They start nests in moist wood and spread by chewing tunnels through the wood. Carpenter ants usually damage wood and can cause extensive damage to the structure of your home.

Types of Ants

Ever asked yourself which ants are likely to be found in your home? Although there are thousands of different types of ants, there are relatively few that we commonly see as pests. These include:

Pavement Ants

Pavement ants are only 1/8 inch long in size. The tiny black Pavement Ant is a very common ant. Large numbers of Pavement Ants are very often found in sidewalk joints, under stones and beneath concrete slabs. Pavement Ants usually do not cause structural damage or present risks to humans but are an eye sore inside the home.

Pharaoh Ants

Worker ants are 1/16” long and the Queen is usually between 1/8 and 1/4 long. Both workers and the Queen have a yellow-brown color. Pharoah Ants originate from the tropics and need artificial heat in order to survive and reproduce, that’s why they tend to live in large heated buildings such as hospitals, hotels and apartments. The Pharoah ant is one of the most difficult ant species to control or get rid of.

Citronella Ants

Citronella ants are usually about ¼ inch long and swarm in the late winter and early spring. Because of their swarming, they are very so often mistaken for termites. Unlike termites, however, citronella ants are simply a nuisance and don’t cause any structural damage to your property or home. These ants are named so because of the pleasant citronella odor they give off when crushed.

Fying Ants

The ‘flying ants’ we commonly see during the early raining season are, in fact, sexually active males and females of the black garden ant who’ve been waiting all summer for the perfect conditions to perform their nuptual flight. Once some ants begin to fly, other ants often detect their chemical smell and join them. These swarms last all day. Black garden ants can actually bite you if you come into contact with them. This bite can sometimes cause allergic reactions in some people.
